By the time 1999 rolled around, Mental Ray found support in both Softimage|XSI and 3ds Max – the latter of which was versioned R3 at the time (and then stylized “3D Studio MAX”). Not a whole lot on youtube yet for "exterior" rendering.Mental Ray’s original developer, Mental Images, was born in 1986, and birthed the software’s first release in 1989. It's going to be a lot of pain, but by time then, maybe adesk will get it all worked out.probably v2019 v2020 etc? who knows. not that Arnold is not, but you may want to get learning Arnold so you're not staying back in time. Mr and vray were quite fine for home int/ext rendering. Personally both this problem and the scene converter should have been nailed down and ready for primetime, which I don't feel they are both NOT.

Not to mention the viewports working tightly with Arnold like mr did. The Scene Converter in 2018 isn't quite perfect to go from mr to Arnold "smoothly". so you don't have to re-work all your past accumulated files like which has now happened with all the mr users. At this point, probably best to re-train yourself with Arnold or something you chose that you think may last a good while into the future.
